Welcome to Golf 2024

Firstly, I would like to thank everyone for the good wishes and congratulation I received when taking up the Captaincy of such a wonderful golf club. It is a great honour for me, and I hope I can do the position justice.

I would also like to thank Duncan for the sterling work done by him and of course Aoife last year steering the ship very successfully and we all would agree we had a good craic.

I would take this opportunity to thank Carol Newland for agreeing to be my Vice Captain, she has a wealth of knowledge about the club and the club will be in safe hands next year. I am sure she will be a great asset to me and the committee.

I would also like to send a warm welcome to the new members this year I hope you enjoy playing and socialising at PDF as much as I do.

Knockouts

Congratulation to Michael Abbott and David Meers winning the pairs knockout against Duncan Leopold and Giles Fox. I am aware that the lunch afterwards was just as long as the final!

The singles knockout final was won by Janice Galloway beating Oliver Klatt,

The sheets are on the notice board for this year’s knockouts if you haven’t entered yet please get your name down as the draw is taking place after the competition of 14th February. I have organised a finger buffet that day and I hope most people will stay and see who they have been drawn against.

Race to Budens

The Race to Budens for 2023 was won for the third time in a row by Janice Galloway however I am sure this year will be a tightly run race with Gary Dowie taking an early lead after the January competition results.

Website

As some of you may be aware we have been working on developing a better web site and thanks to the work done by David Meers it is now up and running. With the design of the new website, it is easier to update and it is hoped that in the future we will be developing new functionality that will provide better information to the members.

There will be the normal information to the general public who accesses the site but there will be a login for members where golf club matters will be contained. Information about how to log in will be sent by email and WhatsApp. With WhatsApp in mind, it is a lot easier to communicate by this method and I would encourage everyone to sign up. Please send your mobile number to Rod Smith or me and we will add you to the list.

Competition Format

As some of you may be aware this year we have changed designated white tee competitions (only white tees) to an ability level and as there has been some confusion I will take this opportunity to clarify the changes. In a designated white tee competition if your playing handicap using the white tee slope rating is 18 and below you must play off the white tee. If your handicap is 19 and above, you have the choice to play of the white or yellow tees. If however, your playing handicap using the yellow slope rating is above 29 you can if desired play off the red tees.

Ladies will be pleased to know nothing has changed you have a choice of either Yellow or Red tees, we have no rating for white tees.

Captains Change Over

A great night was had by all and congratulations to Mary and Mick Berry winning the competition with a magnificent score of 47 points. Music was played by the Buzz Band and everyone seemed to enjoy the evening. A big thank you to the staff who looked after us to their normal high standard.

At 10:45 Duncan putted out, from a long distance away from the hole, and managed to hole it, followed by me driving off the 10th tee. It was quite disconcerting as I was more concerned with not falling over trying to hit the ball!

Captain’s Away Trip

This year’s trip is at El Rompedo in Spain from 6th November to 9th November half board with drinks package and three rounds of golf. Details have already been sent out on the Clubs WhatsApp Group. If you wish to come, please let me know and I will add you to the list. More details to follow.

Upcoming Events

The Easter festival starting 29th March is now open registration forms are in golf reception. Please put your names down with request for buggies.

Charity Bingo night has been scheduled for 28th March the day before to start of the Easter Festival. More details will follow nearer the time.

Interclub Algarve

The league fixtures have been scheduled and are on the notice board in the clubhouse. Anyone wishing to play please let me know. You can access the league web site from the Floresta Parque web site to look at the fixtures. We had a good year last year let's hope for a better result this year.

A big thank you to Rui Baptista for supporting the team again this year. The colour of the shirts this year is RED.

Thanks to all the members that supported the team in our home matches it made such a difference at the end of the season helping us to go form bottom to third place. Please come and support us again this year.

Our first league game is 19th March at home against Vale do Lobo.

Charity

Again this year we will be supporting NECI and Madrugda both very worthy causes, one supporting disabled children the other the older generation like me.

I must thank the WAGS for their generous donation of 550€ towards the charity this year, raised after their golf competition in January.

Wishing you all a wonderful golfing year
