Welcome to my Fourth Captain's Chat of 2023. We've had a busy April with the Easter Festival, the Taça Da Liberdade and the Captains v Vice Captains competitions.
Thank you all for making the Easter Festival such good fun and a party atmosphere on the final night, well done to all the winners.
Congratulations to Foxy, Ian and Janice Galloway and Duane Wessels for a great win in the Taça da Liberdade scoring 94 points. We played a new format for the Captains v Vice Captains of Match play played out to the 18th which I am very pleased to say was won by the Captains team. My thanks to all who played, and we also raised €250 for Charity.

This is well and truly up and running and the feedback is extremely positive so just a reminder for anyone who has not signed up with Rod.
Social Events and Competitions
We have the Past Captains AM/AM event coming up on the 21st of May, it's a shotgun start and there will be a sit down buffet afterwards. Captains will as usual be selecting their teams and the sheets will then be open to all members and guests. The sheet is due to go up on the 7th of May.
10th - 11th June Club Championship
25th June Members Charity Day with a twist, the competition is a 'Royal Flush' shotgun start, dinner and dancing in the evening, so you have plenty of time to go home and get your gladrags on, details will be up on the notice board soon.
Royal Flush
A team event of 4 with each player playing their own single Stapleford game.
After each hole is completed the team opens the envelope left at the side of the green to reveal a playing card that determines what scores count on that hole :
Jack - the best 2 scores to count.
Queen - the best 3 scores to count.
King - all four scores to count.
Joker - NO scores count
At the end just add up all your scores!
Remember (1) not to give away what card is in the envelope to other teams around you…… it will only help them and (2) put the card back in the envelope and pin it down for the next group.
Ladies
The Ladies Social Golf group, which is organised monthly by Rebecca Smith and Janice Galloway, continues to grow in popularity with more players joining each month, with several new players from the Burgau Sports Club joining. Welcome one and all.
In April the Ladies played a 'Fizzy Shambles' fun competition (you'll have to ask the Ladies what that is) and later had a great night out with 18 of the group enjoying a lovely meal at Tiago's newly refurbished restaurant in Budens. The next dates are 26th May and 16th June, please contact either Rebecca or Janice.
Charity Update:
We have raised over €4000.00 so far this year, which is fantastic, thank you all.
The Charities we are supporting this year will be NECI due to our continued and welcome relationship with Baptista and separately Madrugada. Your continued support on Charity Days is greatly appreciated.
Single and Pairs Knock out competitions:
An extension to the 30th of April was provided to allow everyone a little more scope to complete their matches. Unfortunately, some have still not been played and I will be contacting those players separately.
Race to Budens
Janice and Ian Galloway continue to keep a lead but are now closely followed by Duncan Leopold and Gary Dowie, come on everyone let's give Janice and Ian a challenge.
Interleague 2023:
Unfortunately, we haven't got the start we hoped for and lost to Vila Sol 2-3 on the last hole in the last match. We have now won 1 and lost 1. We will be playing Laranjal away in the next knock out match. My thanks to all the inter leaguers for their efforts, it's a tough school.
Buggies
Some good news, GSA have now got an additional 10 buggies, so the pressure has been reduced considerably.
Diary dates for future notice
21st July, there will be a PBB comp followed by a 'Naughties' 50, 60,70 and 80's birthday bash dinner and dance, more info to follow.
20th Oct. The over 70's Comp has been moved from 27th Oct to 20th Oct.
Monthly Competitions:
This link to the monthly competitions schedule lets you know what’s coming up and Mike will post the next quarter’s schedule shortly.
Captains Away Trip:
The Captains Away trip to Dona Filipe playing Pinheiros Altos and San Lorenzo is on the 2nd and 3rd November. It’s all booked and the sign up sheet is on the notice board. I was asked if it is one or two nights. It is two nights. We now have 40 signed up, lets see if we can get to 50. If you require any further information, please contact me.
Thanks again to our Card markers and enjoy March.
Duncan Leopold,
Captain FPGC
