Captains Chat - IX

Updated: Jan 9

Welcome to my Ninth Captain's Chat of 2023. September has been hectic with Captains Day and The Autumn Festival. It's hard to believe we are already 9 months through the year and my thanks to you all - I've thoroughly enjoyed it.

First off, a big Congratulations to the European Ryder Cup Team, what a great result.

Captains Day

The weather wasn't looking too great and although I called on the leprechauns for maybe some soft Irish rain they decided to provide an hour and half of pelting rain. It didn't deter you and with a full field of 92 helped with some small libations and bacon butties we had a fun day followed an evening of craic, dancing and song. A full house for dinner 146 and Mario and his team did us proud.

Margaret Walling won nearest the pin and Chris Padgett the straightest drive.

Rie and Duane Wessells - Mr and Mrs.

My thanks on behalf of Rie and Duane to all of you who contributed to a Wedding present which I was delighted to present to them on the night. Rie said some lovely words which epitomised her fantastic character and their commitment to each other.

Paul Anthony celebrated his birthday so all in all lots happened.

There was a little twist to the evening with Duane conducting an amusing Auction with some personal anecdotes for a luxury hotel stay in London generously donated by the Hilton Curio collection, my thanks to Ed Bracken (General Manager). In addition Rie and Duane generously auctioned some of their own goodies followed by Ann putting up her prize of a golf bag.

We raised €2340.00 on the night. A huge thank you to Frank Finan, George Ralph, and Linda Morris and of course all of you who helped push the price up and contributed to the 11th nearest the pin Charity hole for vouchers to Boia Bar and Agua na Boca. Paul Mott contributed €660 splitting his charity day in the UK to give it to our Charities so €3000.00 overall.   Well done.

Autumn Festival

The course was packed and all our usual friends came over. There was some good but probably more of ' the good, the bad and the ugly' golf played which we all enjoyed even if exhausted by the end. Many thanks to Rui, Mario and Nelson and their teams.

Charity Update:

As indicated above September has been a great month, unfortunately as I write this I don't have the updated figure, but needless to say it's going well.

Single and Pairs Knock out competitions:

Many thanks to everyone for getting their matches either played or in their diary to be completed. Can we please ensure that we have reached the semi-final stage in both the Pairs and Singles by the end of October.

Race to Budens

There is no change with Janice and Ian Galloway continuing to keep the lead.

Interleague 2023

We lost our away match to Palmeras 3.5 to 1.5 and now must dig deep in our last three games against Tavira away, Palmeras and Silves at home.

Change of Diary date for future notice:

Please note that Brian's over 70s competition has been moved from the 27th October to the 20th October.

Course

We have been having regular meetings with GSA and I have to say the course is looking really well with the reeds cut down in the ponds, the fountain at the back of the 12th working again, the surrounds of the bunkers trimmed, and the buggy routes clearly marked. We are having ongoing meetings with GSA and are trying to get red flags for 4 buggies to enable easier access for specific membersonly.

Monthly Competitions:

This link to the monthly competitions schedule lets you know what’s coming up.

Captain's Away Trip:

The Captain's Away trip to Dona Filipe playing Pinheiros Altos and San Lorenzo is now closed with 52 attending and an email has gone out. For those who wish there is the opportunity to book an extra night on the Wednesday, I can provide you with a direct contact at Dona Filipa.

Card Markers

Thanks again to our Card markers who as always do great work. Much appreciated.

Kind regards,

Duncan Leopold
