Captains Chat - VI

Welcome to my Sixth Captain's Chat of 2023. June has been a hot and busy month with the Club Championships and Members Day.

Thankfully the water is available again at the hut, very much needed and appreciated. I would just like to encourage everyone to ensure they take plenty of water out with them on the course. As you all are aware we have had a few issues with slow play and I thank all of you for making an effort to keep up with the game in front. An email re slow play was sent with a very useful link to help us all play Ready Golf and make it more enjoyable for everyone.

Club Championships

My congratulations to Ian Galloway and Ann De Jong for winning the Men's and Ladies' gross competitions respectively. We had 6 in contention for the men's gross on the final day making it a real battle including Declan Noone who gave the hardened men a big scare after his first round score. Ian is having one great birthday year. Interestingly Ann had she been eligible for the Men's would have been second overall with a gross score of 166 to Ian's 162. Well done to both of you.

Congratulations must also go to Peter Smith for winning the Seniors and Gary Dowie and Mary Berry for winning the best nett.

Members Day and Glitter Ball

We had a fun 'Royal Flush' competition which kept everyone guessing the final scores, a format everyone enjoyed. Well done to Mick and Mary Berry and Paul and Sam Tobin for winning.

The Glitter Ball was attended by 70 members and guests and an excellent night was had by all with plenty of dancing and good craic! My thanks to Atlantico Restaurant who provided a voucher for their restaurant in Salema which was raffled and helped raise over €750 for Charity together with entry fees. Well done everyone and thank you.

Dates for your diary

  • 21st July

The sheet is up on the Board for the Noughties Golf day and night, please sign up and make it a big success.

Charity Update:

The Charities we are supporting this year will be NECI due to our continued and welcome relationship with Baptista and separately Madrugada. Your continued support on Charity Days is greatly appreciated. Our collection is coming along nicely.

Single and Pairs Knock out competitions:

Pairs

As mentioned in my last Captains chat, we need to move along and get our matches completed. A previous deadline of 7th June had been given for the Pairs and I am now advised that all Pairs games have completed to the quarter Finals.

Singles

We are behind in sorting our singles out.

Going forward and to help focus everyone still in the competitions, can we please ensure that we have reached the semi-final stage in both the Pairs and Singles by the end of October.

Race to Budens

Janice and Ian Galloway continue to keep a lead, but you never know what's going to happen during their much deserved, holiday, a great opportunity which I note Gary Dowie is hotly pursuing.

Interleague 2023

Unfortunately, we were well beaten by Levante in the semi-final of the knock out, however it was the club's first ever semi-final so congrats to the team for a great effort.

We are slowly moving up the league table, but still need some more away points.

Diary dates for future notice:

  • Noughties Golf day and Night 21st July

  • Pepe Gancedo 6th August

Monthly Competitions:

This link to the monthly competitions schedule lets you know what’s coming up.

Captain's Away Trip:

The Captain's Away trip to Dona Filipe playing Pinheiros Altos and San Lorenzo is on the 2nd and 3rd November. It’s all booked and the sign up sheet is on the notice board.

I have had a few requests to stay the night before, it's less than an hour's drive from here but if any of you wish to go up the night before please let me know and I'll get a price for you B and B only for the Wednesday night.

Thanks again to our Card markers who have been unbelievable.

Best wishes to everyone,

Duncan Leopold
